Sun, Midges & Ticks

All of these are a very real threat and should be taken equally seriously. 

Do not be mislead just because there is a light breeze (or heavier wind) and you may well feel suitably chilled, the sun can easily cause dehydration and heat-stroke, cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer. We recommend having some Sun Screen handy, whatever the Sun Protection Factor.

Luckily Durness being on the sea, there is usually enough of a breeze not to be too bad but inland and on a still day, especially in the evening or after rain be warned the Midges are very real and completely unforgiving. We recommend always having a Midge Net and Midge Repellant handy.

Do not think you are immune, as anyone can pick-up a Tick, these little creatures can cause serious damage and lasting illness (Lyme Disease). Durness is set amongst crofting land, where sheep carry Ticks and when you, in trousers or in shorts, brush past say grass, you can easily pick-up a Tick. We recommend you carry a TickCard and check yourself and your children daily, as well as checking your dogs too.
